Final Fantasy Making a Comeback?

The recent trend here on The Catholic Geeks seems to be video games, and I suppose that means I’ll have to jump on the bandwagon.

I know, it’s absurd — how can I be excited to see a remake of a game that I didn’t like in its original form?

FFVII

That’s right, folks.  Final Fantasy VII has been considered the greatest of the Final Fantasy franchise.  It was the first of its kind — the first to use 3D computer graphics, with fully rendered characters on pre-rendered backgrounds — and really brought the Final Fantasy style out of the geek-basement and into the light of more widespread popularity — it made the Japanese role-playing-video-game popular outside of its home market (so, anybody who likes role-playing video games, be sure to thank Final Fantasy VII).  To date, it is still the best-selling installment of the franchise, with more than 10 million copies sold as of May 2010.

Playstation Event Fights Back with Exclusives

It opened with a lecture still trying to capitalize on how PS responds to the players. Though then they talked about how games clicked into the zeitgeist … the zeitgeist? Really?

The Last Guardian

About time, this thing was only announced about eight years ago. No, I’m not exaggerating. This was supposed to be a PS3 game.

Brought to you by the people who brought you Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, this is about a boy and his … very shaggy griffin? I don’t know, what would you call that one?

It’s coming out in 2016. We’ll see.

Microsoft Opens strong at E3

Okay, Microsoft’s opening video? Very well shot together. I give them points for a nice music video. Though it reminds me that they’ve dumped a ton of money on the Tomb Raider franchise, making it Xbox exclusive — not even for PC. Bastards.

It’s obvious that they fired EVERYBODY involved in the original Xbox One reveal. They spent a lot of time talking about responding to gamers. Including BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY — play Xbox 360 games on Xbox One.

Xbox wins this round of the console wars.

Fallout 4 at E3

I still haven’t even played Fallout 3 yet (I have it on my Xbox 360), but this looks shiny.

Though … they nuked Boston? Do we care?

Eh, I’m New York Irish. We have a friendly grudge with Bahstan.

Anyway, this looks like fun. The graphics an user interface looks smooth and interesting. I’m almost surprised, really.

Also, the opening looks a bit like a parody of the 1950s … with robots …until they nuke it all.

Dishonored — Again

Dishonored came out a few years ago, from the people who brought you the Elder Scrolls franchise. While it looked like fun, and made a few people’s game of the year lists, it looked a little too much like Bioshock for my taste.

Maybe this game trailer will make it look good to you.

Christopher Lee, RIP, at 93

What can you say about a 93-year old actor who was Dracula? Much in the way that he was Saruman. Or Dr. Fu Man Chu. Or Sherlock Holmes. Or one of the better Bond villains. Or … you know what? We’re running out of room already.

Sense8: Great Concept, Poor Content

Netflix_Sense8_promo_artI haven’t watched much of J. Michael Straczynski’s stuff. Actually, it’s just been Babylon 5. (Heh. “Just.”) Of course, Babylon 5 is enough to convince any sane geek that JMS, as he’s fondly known in order to avoid spelling Belarusian names, is a great storyteller. For the less-sane, he was one of the story writers on the MCU movie Thor, wrote several scripts for Murder, She Wrote (yes, I watched that show as a kid), and has a list of comic book writer credits quite literally longer than my arm unless you use a very small font size. (No, really, I pulled up his Wikipedia page and checked.) JMS is a powerful storyteller, and even a casual glance at his work history will show that his problems usually only arise when someone else is telling him how to write.

This leads me to assume that Sense8, which he worked on and produced with the Wachowskis through his company Studio JMS, is a prime example of why Straczynski is better when he’s unambiguously in charge.  Continue reading

Love Among the Wheelchairs

No2There are two things you should know to put this post in context. First, I’m handicapped; I have fibromyalgia and use a cane and wheelchair to get around. In fact, I’m coming up on my 10th anniversary of getting my very first cane. Second, someone’s organizing an orgy for people like me in Toronto.

No, I’m not using hyperbole, like where someone says stuff like “a culinary orgy” or “an orgy of destruction.” I mean a sex party. For disabled people. Like me.

Not just no, but hay-ul no.

Look, it’s not just a Catholic thing. Catholics don’t have a problem with sex. Come on — the stereotypical large Catholic family? Yeah, you don’t get that if you have a problem with sex. Oh, and those famous statues and paintings and other forms of art depicting the naked human form? Yeah, you don’t get those if you have a problem with nudity.

The problem we have is when you boil everything down to just that, as if there’s nothing more to it. And that’s exactly what’s happening here.  Continue reading

Game So As to Win: What is Competitive Gaming?

Staredown

A hulking man in an orange military uniform squares off against a blue-clad Chinese kung fu artist. A horde of undead marshals an army against a force of wood-elves. A band of five warriors (who all look completely different and have a wide spread of powers and techniques) square off against a similarly diverse band, fighting against one another amidst a sea of minions. Two wizards cast devastating spells at one another and summon minions of all types. Two ancient tactical masters deploy their pieces across a starkly-decorated board, seeking to envelop one another.

And that’s what competitive gaming looks like! (For the curious, that was Streetfighter, Warcraft, League of Legends, Magic: The Gathering, and Go.)

I’ve been playing games of all sorts for a while; competitive gaming is something I’m only starting to get into. People who aren’t familiar with it tend to be intimidated by it, dismissive of it, irritated with it, or (very rarely) intrigued by it. So why do I get so hyped about it?

Fisking Catholic Fiction

Sometimes, I love my fellow Catholics.

And sometimes, they are brain-dead stupid.

If you look at this article from CatholicFiction.net, you’ll see this great example of brain death.

Science fiction has also been derelict in its duty. Who does science fiction serve? Sci-fi is a significant buttress propping up the established church of Scientism. Sci-fi flatters both rightist and leftist elites: square-jarred heroes battle alien savages along the outer space frontier while proclaiming anti-religious and anti-natalist platitudes. As an avid reader of the genre, I have come up with a list of the major shortcomings of the genre.

While I can think of some particular examples of what this nimrod (a creature from the black lagoon named Nito Gnoci), this is just … “Avid reader?” Really?

Funny, as an avid reader myself, Nito, you’re an idiot. Continue reading
